Seven Men on Trial for Kai McGinley’s Murder in Erith
The high-profile trial of seven men accused of murdering 24-year-old Kai McGinley in Erith on February 9 last year is unfolding today at the Old Bailey. Prosecutors claim Kai was the victim of a cold, calculated assassination linked to drug dealings. The defendants face charges not only for Kai’s murder but also for the attempted murder of two of his friends.
Shocking Eyewitness Accounts From Night of the Killing
Neighbours recall hearing gunshots and witnessing a terrifying scene. A resident heard a man, identified as Mr Burton, desperately shout, “Can someone call the police? My friend’s been shot?” just minutes after the shooting.
A teenage girl on the street was woken by four or five loud pops. She saw Kai stumbling along the pavement, injured. Her mother, hearing the commotion and Mr Burton’s cries that “They had guns,” swiftly dialled 999. Moments earlier, residents spotted a group of men in black balaclavas, hyped up and armed with large, long black objects – believed to be guns. After firing four shots, the men fled up the road.
CCTV and Audio Evidence Shed Light on Attack
Although CCTV captured the aftermath, the shooting itself was missed on camera. However, audio from a nearby camera on Sandcliff Road recorded five gunshots over 20 seconds at 8:46pm. This chilling soundscape backs witness testimonies.
Survivor Recounts Terrifying Moments
Norman Samura, who was in the Mini with Kai that night, described being surrounded by six to eight masked men. He heard the chilling threat, “I’m going to f**k you up,” followed by gunfire. Norman had to smash a window and scramble to escape as Kai was fatally shot during the frenzied attack.
Planned Ambush Uncovered by Prosecutor
The attack happened on Pembroke Road, a narrow residential street. A Land Rover rammed the Mini carrying Kai and his friends, forcing it onto the pavement. Prosecutor Brian O’Neill revealed the defendants, in a Land Rover and Peugeot, circled the area using burner phones to coordinate. Crucially, the Peugeot’s phone was connected to Derek Hards, a customer of Kai and his friends, enabling them to intercept and target Kai’s car in a deadly execution.
The trial continues at the Old Bailey with further explosive revelations expected.
