Chilli Sauce Burglar Jailed After Pensioner’s Son Fights Back
A notorious burglar’s chilli sauce attack backfired spectacularly when a quick-thinking son and a Good Samaritan stopped him in his tracks. Mohammed Nawaz, with 36 prior offences, broke into an elderly woman’s Hall Green home on 26 August, expecting an easy score.
Son’s Brave Stand and Passer-by Hero
But Nawaz miscalculated. The woman’s son was visiting and confronted him after he forced his way inside. In a desperate move, Nawaz sprayed a watery hot chilli sauce mix from a washing-up liquid bottle at both victims, temporarily blinding the 49-year-old son, before fleeing empty-handed.
His escape was short-lived. A man who’d heard the screams rushed over and was also hit with the chilli concoction. Undeterred, he and other passers-by tackled Nawaz to the ground until police arrived to arrest him.
Nine Years Behind Bars for Repeat Offender
Nawaz, 52 and homeless, faced charges including attempted robbery and administering a noxious substance. At Birmingham Crown Court on 13 November, he pleaded guilty and was jailed for nine years and one month.
“We believe Nawaz saw the woman as an easy target, but hadn’t counted on her son’s bravery,” said Detective Constable Arita Chonkria. “Thankfully, neither victim was seriously hurt. We’re also grateful to the man who helped pin Nawaz down – his courageous actions will be formally recognised soon.”
History of Violence with Chilli Sauce Attacks
This is not Nawaz’s first chilli sauce incident. In 2010, he broke into a 93-year-old’s home in Sparkhill, squirted a substance in their face, and robbed them. This latest jail term sends a clear message to repeat criminals targeting the elderly.
