UK Drug Gang Busted: 195 Years of Jail Time for Billion-Pound Smugglers
A massive blow has been dealt to organised crime after a ruthless drug gang, responsible for smuggling over £1 billion worth of drugs into the UK, was handed a collective 195 years behind bars.
Four-Year Crackdown Nets 12 Convictions
After a relentless four-year probe by the Metropolitan Police and the National Crime Agency (NCA), 12 members of the gang were convicted of drug offences that rocked communities across London and beyond.
“This operation is a pivotal moment for community safety. It shows our commitment to wiping out the networks that feed drug crime and violence,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Ella Marriott, head of the London Regional Organised Crime Unit.
From West London to Greater Manchester: The Crime Web Unraveled
The investigation began in West London, where kingpins like Paul O’Brien and Lee Mortimer ran extensive drug operations. A May 2020 raid seized huge hauls of cocaine and more than £1 million in cash, exposing the gang’s wide-reaching criminal empire.
Meanwhile, Greater Manchester was home to another key player: Jonathan Strogylos. His network imported a staggering 8.5 tonnes of cocaine between 2017 and 2020. The Met, NCA, and Essex Police worked together to smash this colossal drug ring.
Long Sentences for Top Dogs
- Paul O’Brien – 21 years for conspiracy to import Class A drugs
- Lee Mortimer – 18 years for drug trafficking and money laundering
- Jonathan Strogylos – a whopping 31 years for leading cocaine importation and distribution
NCA Branch Commander Martin Clarke highlighted the gang’s global connections, praising the joint law enforcement effort: “This operation shows the power of collaboration in dismantling sophisticated international drug networks.”
Warning to Drug Dealers Everywhere
The Met and its partners have sent a clear message: drug trafficking will not go unchecked in the UK. With these heavy sentences, they are determined to protect communities and smash drug supply chains wherever they lurk.
