Speed Demon Biker Gets 21 Months for Bonfire Chaos
A 19-year-old motorcyclist, Jack Sheppard, has been slammed with 21 months in a young offenders’ institution for dangerous driving that left several injured during the Barcombe bonfire celebrations last November.
Barcombe Bonfire Night Turns Deadly
The annual event, famous for its dazzling fireworks, quickly turned into a nightmare. On November 19, 2022, Sheppard sped through a road closure designed to keep pedestrians safe. Despite the usual 30mph limit, he was clocked at 40mph on Barcombe High Street at 10:20pm, smashing into a group of people.
Serious Injuries and Court Justice
At Lewes Crown Court on April 22, it emerged that Sheppard knew the road was closed and had even attended the event earlier. The crash left one woman unconscious with life-changing injuries, another seriously hurt and hospitalised, plus three more with minor injuries.
Police from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, led by Tudor Wells, blasted Sheppard for ignoring obvious road closures. “He posed a huge danger to the walkers heading home,” Wells said. “Sheppard was lucky not to have caused fatalities.”
Driving Ban Adds to Sentence
Along with his time inside, Sheppard has been banned from driving or riding for two years and ten months. The harsh punishment sends a clear warning about the perils of reckless speed – especially during events packed with families and pedestrians.
