Chris Kaba: From Nightclub Shooter to Fatal Police Shooting
Chris Kaba, shot dead by Met Police officer Martyn Blake in September 2022, has been exposed as a key suspect in a nightclub shooting just days before his death. The 24-year-old was a “core member” of the feared Brixton Hill-based 67 gang, accused of firing at a rival gang member at a Hackney nightclub.
Gunfire Erupts in Oval Space Nightclub
On August 30, 2022, Kaba allegedly opened fire at Brandon Malutshi from the rival 1-7 gang. Malutshi was hit twice in the legs—once on the dancefloor and again while fleeing outside. Witnesses, spotting Kaba wearing a balaclava, singled him out as the shooter. The revolver was reportedly smuggled into the club by associate Marcus Pottinger.
Kaba made his escape in a Range Rover. Meanwhile, another associate, Shemiah Bell, drove the Audi Q8—later seen in the fatal police chase—to a safe spot where Kaba retrieved it. The Audi had links to other violent incidents, including a May shooting in Bromley and another near a Brixton school just a day before Kaba’s death.
Fatal Police Chase in Streatham
On September 5, 2022, Kaba was fatally shot by Officer Martyn Blake during a police pursuit in Streatham, South London. He was driving the same Audi Q8 tied to gang violence and previous shootings. Though no weapon was found in the car, gunshot residue was found on Kaba’s sleeve and a balaclava was in his pocket. A handgun was later recovered nearby but hasn’t been directly linked to him.
Kaba’s Lengthy Criminal Record and Gang Ties
With reporting restrictions lifted following Blake’s acquittal on murder charges, Kaba’s criminal past is now public. His record dates back to age 13 and includes serious offences such as stabbing, weapon possession, and a 2017 jail term for an imitation firearm. He was awaiting trial for the nightclub shooting alongside six others.
The 67 gang, with over 50 violent members, is blamed for a slew of shootings, stabbings, and drug crimes. Police identified Kaba as a “principal gunman” who featured in drill rap videos with other members.
Legal Fallout and Ongoing Gang Violence Concerns
Several associates faced jail: Marcus Pottinger got 9 years, Shemiah Bell (aka “Bones”) 10 years, and Connell Bamgboye 5½ years, all for firearm offences and violent attacks. Police reports warned that tensions remain high and Kaba’s gang might seek revenge, putting officers at risk.
Despite the grim details emerging, Kaba’s family continues to mourn, struggling for closure even as his controversial past fuels debates over London’s gang violence and policing tactics.
