Council Worker Hurt in Firework Blast at Southsea Common
Firework Explosion Sparks Police Lockdown
A council bin worker was rushed to hospital after a firework exploded inside a bin on Southsea Common. The blast happened just after 12.40pm, prompting police to seal off Southsea Common and surrounding roads including Clarence Parade, Osborne Road, Palmerston Road, and Avenue de Caen.
Army Bomb Squad Called In Amid Safety Scare
Fearing the firework could still be an active threat, police called in the Army Bomb Unit from Aldershot. The device was initially thought to be viable, causing a major safety alert in the busy area.
Minor Injuries After BBQ and Firework Mix-up
The injured worker was treated for minor burns and has since been discharged from hospital. Investigations reveal the explosion was sparked by a smouldering barbecue combined with a discarded ‘rocket-style’ firework tossed into the bin at Clarence Parade.
Police Urge Caution with Barbecues and Fireworks
All road closures have now been lifted. Hampshire Constabulary issued a safety warning:
“We would like to take this opportunity to remind people of the importance of disposing of barbecues and fireworks safely. Our priority was to ensure the safety of members of the public and we thank the community for their patience during this time.”
Stay safe this season – dispose of your fireworks and barbecues properly to avoid dangerous blasts.
