Cheshire Police Launch Corporate Manslaughter Probe at Chester Hospital
Cheshire Police have opened an investigation into possible corporate manslaughter at the Countess of Chester Hospital. This follows nurse Lucy Letby’s chilling conviction for murdering seven newborns and attempting to kill six more in the hospital’s neonatal unit between 2015 and 2016.
Hospital Executives Under Scrutiny
Letby’s shocking life sentence sparked urgent calls to probe hospital chiefs over alleged inaction despite warning signs about the serial killer. Detective Superintendent Simon Blackwell, who leads Operation Hummingbird—the investigation into Letby—confirmed the new inquiry.
The probe will focus on hospital leadership and decision-making from June 2015 to June 2016. It aims to find out if senior staff acted negligently or criminally in handling concerns about Letby.
No Individual Suspects Yet
So far, the investigation isn’t targeting any specific hospital executives for gross negligence manslaughter. Detective Superintendent Blackwell stressed the probe is just getting started.
“The investigation is in the very early stages, and we are unable to go into any further details or answer specific questions at this time,” said Blackwell. “We recognise the devastating impact on the families involved and are committed to providing ongoing support throughout.”
This fresh probe raises tough questions about accountability at one of Britain’s trusted NHS hospitals.
