Dangerous Driver Jailed for Nearly a Decade After Fatal M27 Crash
A reckless driver has been locked up for nine years and nine months after a deadly smash on the M27 claimed the life of a lorry driver.
High-Speed Horror on M27
Ross Neiland, 38, from Littlehampton, was blasted down the motorway at over 90mph in horrendous weather on February 21, 2024. Near Junction 5, he lost control of his Volkswagen Polo, crashing into the path of a lorry.
The truck, driven by 36-year-old Michal Kaminski of Salisbury, swerved off the road, smashing into an overhead gantry support before bursting into flames. Kaminski was pronounced dead at the scene. The M27 was shut for two days for investigation and repairs.
Harsh Court Sentence
At Southampton Crown Court, Neiland was convicted of multiple offences, including causing death by dangerous driving, driving uninsured and unlicensed, and refusing a blood test.
He tried to flee the scene but was caught by members of the public. Police also found stolen shoplifted items in his possession, including meat, cheese, and laundry detergent. Alongside his jail term, he received a lengthy driving ban.
Tributes and Tough Warning
Michal Kaminski was remembered by family as a kind, hardworking man. They thanked those who supported them throughout the investigation.
“Michal was innocently going about his daily work when his life was cruelly cut short by the selfish actions of another driver,” said lead officer Phil Hanham QPM.
Hanham described dash cam footage of Neiland speeding through heavy rain as “shocking” and a stark reminder of reckless driving’s deadly cost.
“This case shows how dangerous driving can ruin lives. If you drive recklessly, you risk prison – and destroying families,” Hanham warned.
The tragedy has left a deep mark on emergency crews, witnesses, and the families involved, highlighting the urgent need for responsible road behaviour across the UK.
