Reckless Joyride Ends in Smash and Jail Time
Ryan Jarvis, 40, from Bedson Walk, was slammed with a 14-month jail sentence at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday 11 May 2018. He pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, and using a car without a licence or insurance.
Car Theft Chaos Outside Primary School
On 22 March 2018, Jarvis swiped his mum’s car and went on a dangerous joyride in Gillingham. Just outside a primary school on Woodlands Road, he crashed into another car. That collision caused a domino effect, hitting a bus and a minibus. Thankfully, only one person suffered minor injuries.
Police Chase Ends in Crash
Before the crash, officers spotted Jarvis driving the stolen car and tried to stop him. Instead, Jarvis floored it, sparking the crash around 3pm. He’s now banned from driving for three years and must pass an extended driving test before getting back behind the wheel.
‘Sheer Luck No One Was Seriously Hurt’
“Jarvis drove really irresponsibly and it was only sheer luck that nobody was injured seriously,” said investigating officer PC Rebecca Kemp. “The collision happened just before young children were due to leave a nearby school. I dread to think what might have happened if this crash took place minutes later.”
“I hope this sentencing deters others from behaving recklessly. His driving ban and time in jail should give him time to reflect on his actions.”
