Grim Night in Colston Bassett: Hooded Killer Strikes Mum-of-Three

A chilling grainy CCTV snap of a hooded man lurking outside a quiet cottage in Hall Lane, Colston Bassett, cracked open a shocking murder case. On the night of Saturday, 26 February, police found 47-year-old Clair Ablewhite stabbed to death in her pyjamas. The mum-of-three’s body bore deep wounds to her neck and chest, signalling a brutal, personal attack.

Forensics found little more than blood-stained shoe prints inside the home. Clair’s mobile phone vanished and the murder weapon was nowhere to be seen. The secluded location and scarce CCTV footage made the hunt tricky.

Detective’s Drive and Clues from Close-Knit Community

Detective Inspector Mel Crutchley took charge, urging her team to dig into Clair’s life and relationships. “Understanding the victim’s background often points to the killer,” she said.

  • Clair, a Bingham native, married young and raised three boys on the family farm.
  • Post-divorce, she started fresh in Colston Bassett, opening a successful dog walking and boarding business.
  • Friendly and outgoing, she was well-liked in her new community.

DI Crutchley suspects the killer was someone Clair knew. “There was no forced entry or burglary. The injuries were very personal,” she added.

Breakthrough: French Neighbour’s CCTV Snags Suspect

A major break came when Clair’s neighbour, living in France, spotted the hooded figure on his security camera — complete with audio capturing the fatal attack. The neighbour flew back to help police, giving them their first real lead.

The CCTV showed a man wearing Adidas trainers matching bloody footprints at the scene. Importantly, detectives noticed his rucksack and concluded he likely arrived on foot or bike, not by car.

Thanks to a faulty bike reflector, officers traced his route backwards through patchy CCTV and dashcam footage. Meanwhile, Clair’s water-damaged phone was found in a nearby stream and painstakingly recovered.

Jailed Killer: From Online Romance to Brutal Murder

Secret WhatsApp messages revealed Clair’s intimate link to 26-year-old John Jessop from Newark, who’d ridden 17 miles by bike to commit the crime and back. Their relationship ended days before the murder, amid concerns over their age gap.

Jessop stopped for a pasty en route, caught on shop cameras wearing the same jacket spotted on neighbour’s footage.

Suspiciously, Jessop left his phone at home the night Clair was killed but had recently installed and deleted Google Maps – a move that raised eyebrows.

On 11 March, Jessop was charged with Clair’s murder. He later pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court and was jailed for 20 years, with a minimum of 17 years and eight months behind bars.

“Jessop showed no remorse and kept quiet during interviews. His brutal attack tore apart a loving mum, daughter, and friend,” said DI Crutchley. “While Clair’s dad tried desperately to save her, Jessop was downing his first pint in a Newark pub. This sentence won’t bring her back, but it delivers justice.”

A heartfelt thanks went to the neighbour who helped police zero in on the killer, proving that even the smallest clue can crack the toughest cases.
