Home Improvement Boss Banned Over Nearly One Million Nuisance Calls
A Sussex home improvement director has been slapped with a four-year ban after his firm bombarded the UK with almost one million nuisance calls. Callum Jones, head of Colourcoat Ltd, was disqualified after an Insolvency Service probe exposed a torrent of 969,273 unsolicited marketing calls made between 2019 and 2020.
Colourcoat’s Rogue Tactics Exposed
Colourcoat Ltd specialised in roof cleaning, wall coating, and insulation services but repeatedly broke privacy laws by launching aggressive cold calls. Shockingly, nearly half of the calls targeted people who had signed up to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), a register to block such calls.
- The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined Colourcoat £130,000 in 2021 for flouting rules.
- The company went bust in June 2023, leaving £56,000 of the fine unpaid.
- Jones sanctioned deceptive methods using fake company names like “Homes Advice Bureau,” “EcoSolve UK,” and even “Citizens Advice” to hoodwink potential customers.
Consumer Complaints Flood In
Out of those close to one million calls, 452,811 hit TPS registrants, triggering dozens of complaints. Regulators logged 24 complaints with TPS and 10 with the ICO, citing persistent, harassing, and sometimes abusive phone calls.
Andy Curry, ICO Director of Enforcement and Investigations, blasted the firm: “Nobody should feel harassed just by answering the phone. Our investigation revealed a blatant disregard for the law and the privacy of individuals.”
Curry confirmed ICO and the Insolvency Service are working together to stop dodgy directors like Jones from just setting up shop under a new name to keep pestering the public.
Four-Year Business Ban for Jones
The Secretary of State for Business and Trade accepted Jones’s disqualification, starting February 3, 2025. He is barred from forming, promoting, or managing any company without court permission for four years.
Victoria Edgar, Chief Investigator at the Insolvency Service, warned: “Callum Jones allowed his company to plague households for months with intrusive cold calls. This disqualification sends a strong message that unlawful marketing tactics won’t be tolerated.”
Despite paying part of the ICO fine before liquidation, Colourcoat still owes nearly £56,000. The ICO first issued an enforcement notice back in June 2021 over breaches of privacy and electronic communications rules.
How to Shield Yourself From Nuisance Calls
- Register your number with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) to block unsolicited marketing calls.
- Report nuisance calls to the ICO or TPS immediately.
- Use call-blocking apps and technology to filter unwanted numbers.
- If you suspect fraud or aggressive marketing, contact Action Fraud for help.
This crackdown underlines regulators’ commitment to protecting consumers from rogue firms who think cold calling is a free-for-all. Stay sharp and report any dodgy calls to help stop scams in their tracks.
