Hare Coursing Horror: Dog Brutally Injured and Euthanised After Cruel Hunt
Triumph Turns Tragedy After Two-Hour Hare Coursing Journey
On 9 February last year, Shane Hooton, John Langan, and Thomas Jaffray travelled over two hours to a Lincolnshire field near Waddingham for a hare coursing event. They brought three dogs—two white, one black. The black dog was left with such savage injuries it had to be put down.
Shocking Neglect: Owner Tried to Patch Up Beast with Glue and Stitches
“When officers saw the horrific injuries to the black dog they immediately took it to a vet where it was sadly put to sleep,” said DC Aaron Flint, Wildlife Crime Officer.
Hooton knew about the dog’s wounds for six days but chose to self-medicate, trying to stitch and glue the injury. “There’s even evidence he discussed stapling it,” Flint revealed. “Taking the dog coursing caused horrendous, unnecessary suffering. Immediate veterinary care should have been sought.”
Two of the men also flaunted Criminal Behaviour Orders meant to protect animals and the public. DC Flint warned, “This case shows that when offenders break the law and cruelty is involved, we will act firmly.”
Police Catch Trio Red-Handed at Hare Chase
Authorities spotted the men lined up about 50 metres apart, one dog chasing a hare. Police blocked their silver Vauxhall Vectra, arrested the trio, and seized their phones, vehicle, and dogs.
Graphic videos from 6 February on their phones showed the black dog’s “de-gloved” chin injury and shocking attempts at first aid. The horrific footage won’t be published due to its distressing nature.
Harsh Sentences for Hare Coursing Cruelty
- Shane Hooton, 33: Six-month suspended prison sentence, 15-year Criminal Behaviour Order, 10-year dog ban, 180 hours unpaid work, and fines for causing unnecessary suffering, trespassing, and breaching court orders.
- John Langan, 39: Four-month suspended sentence, 180 hours community work, and fines for trespassing and breaching Criminal Behaviour Order.
- Thomas Jaffray, 42: 18-month community order with 150 hours unpaid work and fines for trespassing.
The silver Vauxhall Vectra was confiscated, and each man must pay over £1,700 towards dog care costs.
Lincolnshire Police: Zero Tolerance on Hare Coursing
“Lincolnshire Police will continue to target those who think they can act with cruelty and impunity,” warned DC Flint.
