Drunk Driver Jailed for Six Years After Killing Two Teenage Runners
Michael Casey’s deadly crash in Aldershot
Michael Casey, 24, from Tottenham, has been locked up for six years after fatally running down two teenage girls in Aldershot. Casey pleaded guilty today to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving at Winchester Crown Court.
On November 8, Casey was behind the wheel of a black Ford Focus, speeding and over the drink-drive limit, when he struck 16-year-old Stacey Burrows and 17-year-old Lucy Pygott. The pair were crossing Queens Avenue on a pedestrian crossing after their running club training session — obeying the red traffic lights and green man signal. It was 7.10pm when tragedy struck.
Crash details and court findings
Both Stacey and Lucy suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Casey was arrested immediately, with the Serious Collision Investigation Unit revealing he was intoxicated and distracted while speeding.
Forensic experts confirmed Casey had at least six seconds to react — thanks to the amber light preceding the green man — but failed to slow down or stop, leading to the devastating collision.
Casey received concurrent six-year sentences for the deaths and a 10-year driving ban.
Heartbreaking tributes and warnings
“This is a truly tragic case which has had a huge impact on everyone who knew Stacey and Lucy,” said Sgt Mark Furse, senior investigating officer. “Both had such promising futures but were cruelly taken because of Casey’s recklessness. The families are now left to live with this heartbreaking loss – all avoidable if Casey had made the right choice.”
“He was over the limit, speeding well above 30mph, and admitted being distracted. Let this serve as a stark warning: drink-driving kills. It ruins lives — both victims and offenders alike.”
Lucy’s family paid tribute, saying: “Lucy was a truly exceptional girl—in appearance, personality, achievements and potential. She should have been allowed to enjoy many more happy years.”
