Car Crashes Into Angus Steakhouse After Mounting Pavement in Piccadilly Circus
Chaos erupted in Central London’s iconic Piccadilly Circus on Tuesday evening when a car careered onto the pavement, hit a pedestrian, and smashed straight through the front of Angus Steakhouse. Three people – the pedestrian, driver, and a passenger – were rushed to hospital with injuries. Thankfully, no diners inside the busy restaurant were hurt.
Driver Arrested, Emergency Services Race to Scene
The crash happened just after 7pm on November 12. Police arrested the driver on suspicion of dangerous driving. A Met Police spokesperson confirmed the driver avoided serious injury but was taken to hospital as a precaution. The conditions of the pedestrian and passenger are still unknown.
Witnesses described hearing a “massive bang” and seeing people sprinting away from the carnage. Local shop worker Ramu, who saw it all, feared it could have been a terror attack. “I just saw the car speed up, hit the curb near the fountain, then fly onto the pavement,” he said.
Firefighters had to cut open a car door to free one trapped inside. Ambulance crews, including advanced paramedics, treated and transported all three injured to a major trauma centre. Two were prioritised for urgent care.
Road Closures and Heavy Emergency Response in London’s Busy Tourist Hub
The smash sparked major road closures near the junction of Haymarket and Coventry Street, with emergency services sealing off the area. Images showed the badly damaged dark-coloured car surrounded by police tape.
Tourists in nearby hotels described scenes of intense emergency response. One South African visitor said: “When we arrived, the whole area was cordoned off by cops. There were ambulances and fire engines everywhere.”
Investigation Ongoing, Authorities Seek Witnesses
The crash casts a serious shadow over the bustling tourist hotspot, shifting focus from a recent lighthearted online buzz around Angus Steakhouse. Police continue to investigate and urge anyone with information to come forward.
