Sheerness Speed Demon Jailed for 100mph Police Chase in Stolen Audi
A reckless driver from Sheerness who tore through the streets at over 100mph in a stolen car has been locked up. Harrison Bennett, 29, hurled glass bottles from his speeding Audi and drove head-on into oncoming traffic during a terrifying police chase last year.
High-Speed Madness on Sheerness Streets
On the evening of 13 December 2019, police spotted Bennett driving a stolen Audi with cloned number plates on 1 High Street, Sheerness. When officers tried to stop him, he slammed the accelerator, smashing well past the 40mph limit and reaching over 100mph.
Bennett’s dangerous antics didn’t stop there. He threw glass bottles out the window and fearlessly drove on the wrong side of the road, putting lives at serious risk.
Pursuit Aborted but Crook Caught
With Bennett’s erratic driving endangering the public, officers pulled back the chase for safety reasons. But they didn’t give up. A search soon found the Audi abandoned outside a home on Berridge Road.
Bennett was found inside, desperately flushing the car keys down the toilet to get rid of evidence. Police recovered the keys and arrested him the next day.
Justice Served: 18 Months Behind Bars
At Maidstone Crown Court on 5 March 2020, Bennett admitted to dangerous driving, handling stolen goods, and driving without a licence or insurance. The judge sentenced him to 18 months in prison and slapped a 30-month driving ban on him.
“Bennett drove so dangerously that evening that it was lucky no one was injured,” said Detective Constable Kara Sweetland of North Kent CID. “He showed complete disregard for everyone’s safety — himself, his passenger, police, and other road users. Though we had to stop the pursuit, quick police work ensured he was caught and taken off Sheerness roads. Now, he can’t threaten the public or other drivers.”
