Preston, January 10, 2023 – Sergeant Steve Quilliam and Custody Detention Officer Lisa Margerison have been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024 after a gutsy rescue at Preston Custody Office. Their quick thinking saved an inmate trapped in a blazing, smoke-filled cell.
Smoke, Flames and Split-Second Decisions
In the early hours of January 10, a fire alarm sounded at Preston Custody Office, though no location was given. Sgt. Quilliam immediately checked CCTV and spotted smoke billowing from a detention corridor. Racing to the scene, the pair found a cell filled with thick black smoke and flames licking the ceiling.
Without protective gear or firefighting equipment, they risked their lives entering the smoky cell. After several brave attempts, they found the detainee curled up at the rear and dragged him to safety through the choking fire and smoke.
Smoke Inhalation Couldn’t Stop Their Courage
Both officers suffered smoke inhalation but refused to quit until backup arrived with proper gear to tackle the fire. Thankfully, neither sustained serious injuries and both returned to duty later that shift. The rescued detainee was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Police Chiefs Praise Their Selfless Bravery
Zeg Awan, Chair of Lancashire Police Federation, hailed the pair’s selflessness under immense pressure faced by law enforcement. Chief Constable Sacha Hatchett called their actions “outstanding heroism” that averted a potentially catastrophic disaster.
Their nomination underlines the highest ideals of police duty and courage. The nation now awaits the awards announcement, ready to salute these fearless officers who risked everything to save a life.
