A man has been charged after a daring drone drug drop was foiled at HMP Erlestoke, the Category C men’s prison in Wiltshire.
Drug Drone Intercepted Over Prison
Oliver Onyeahasi, 25, from Aberdeen Road, Cotham, is facing serious charges for his role in attempting to smuggle multiple illegal substances into the prison via drone. The haul included:
- Cocaine
- Cannabis
- Anabolic steroids
- An unspecified Class C drug
The attempted drone drop took place in the early hours of October 1, 2023, but was stopped in its tracks by vigilant prison staff.
Facing Court in July 2025
Wiltshire Police confirmed Onyeahasi has been bailed and is set to appear at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on 16 July 2025.
“The drone was successfully intercepted thanks to the alertness of prison staff and our rapid response. These charges form part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the supply of illegal drugs into prisons,” a police spokesperson said.
Drone Drug Smuggling: A Growing Menace
Drones smuggling contraband into UK prisons are a rising headache for law enforcement. Besides drugs, contraband often includes phones, SIM cards, and weapons. The trend of using drones to transport Class A and B substances is on the rise.
HMP Erlestoke, near Devizes, has seen several such smuggling attempts before. Home to over 500 male inmates, the prison remains a prime target for these high-tech drug runs.
