Drug Smuggler’s Fancy Beer Can Trick Lands Him in Jail
A man tried to smuggle Class A drugs hidden inside a fake beer can, but his clever plan backfired. Patrick Smith, 34, is now behind bars for over three years.
High-Speed Chase Ends Badly for Smith
On December 3, cops from the Neighbourhood Support Team spotted Smith in Woodston, Peterborough, chatting with known drug users on Cubitt Way. When officers moved to frisk him, Smith made a daring escape – mounting the kerb and narrowly missing officers and bollards as he bolted away.
Drugs Hidden in Fake Beer Can Found Near Fence
Smith’s car was later found in Earl Spencer Court. Police found him nearby trying to sneak off on foot. A search revealed a large stash of heroin and crack cocaine hidden inside a fake beer can Smith had dumped near a fence where he was lurking.
Sentenced to Over Three Years and Banned from Driving
Smith, from Sycamore Road, Whittlesey, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply heroin and crack cocaine, possession of criminal property (£290 cash), and obstructing an officer. On February 16, Cambridge Crown Court sentenced him to three years and two months in prison. He also received a 43-month driving ban.
The court has ordered the £290 cash to be handed over to Cambridge Recovery Service.
