Headteacher’s Tragic Death Sparks Outcry Over Ofsted Inspections

Ruth Perry, head of Caversham Primary School in Reading, took her own life after her school was downgraded from ‘outstanding’ to ‘inadequate’ in an Ofsted report. The devastating news has sent shockwaves through the education community.

Unions Demand Immediate Halt to Inspections

The National Education Union, school leaders’ union NAHT, and the Association of School and College Leaders have all called for Ofsted inspections to be paused. Ofsted has yet to comment on the tragedy.

Paul Whiteman, general secretary of NAHT, slammed the current system: “It cannot be right that we treat dedicated professionals this way. Something has to change.” He added, “This has to be a watershed moment. Given the strength of feeling, Ofsted should pause inspections this week for some calm reflection.”

Calls for Radical Review of Inspection System

Dr Mary Bousted of the National Education Union echoed calls for a pause, highlighting the “unmanageable and counterproductive stress” inspections place on school leaders.

Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, demanded “an immediate review” of the system, criticising the “graded judgements that reduce everything a school does to a single blunt descriptor.”

Family Demands Schools Boycott Ofsted

Ms Perry’s sister, Julia Waters, urged a bold response: “Schools should boycott Ofsted until there’s a thorough, independent review and real changes happen.” She called on headteachers and unions to refuse entry to inspectors or at least ignore their requests.

Julia revealed troubling examples from the inspection feedback. Inspectors reportedly claimed a boy doing a dance move similar to flossing was “evidence of sexualisation” of children. Allegations of child-on-child abuse were also made, which turned out to be nothing more than a playground scuffle.

The bitter fallout from this tragic case has ignited a fierce debate over the harmful impact of Ofsted’s harsh inspection regime on school staff and pupils alike.
