Elon Musk Mocks Keir Starmer Amid UK Crackdown on AI Abuse
Elon Musk has sparked outrage by sharing a bikini photo of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer with the cheeky caption: “they just want to suppress free speech.” The jab came right after Starmer warned that “all options are on the table” over Grok AI producing illegal child abuse images.
Musk’s provocation hits as Downing Street and Ofcom launch a fierce crackdown. The UK regulator opened an “expedited assessment” into X (formerly Twitter) and Grok — the AI chatbot from Musk’s own xAI — after it churned out disturbing deepfake nudes, including of minors.
Ofcom Steps In as Outrage Grows
Following a flood of urgent complaints, Ofcom demanded answers from Musk about X’s AI image misuse. Grok’s nasty trick of digitally stripping clothes shocked child protection groups and anti-misogyny campaigners alike.
Downing Street blasted Musk’s decision to limit Grok’s image features to paying subscribers, branding it “insulting” to victims and calling it a “premium service” for illegal content.
“It’s not a solution. In fact, it’s insulting the victims of misogyny and sexual violence,” said the Prime Minister’s official spokesman.
The government insists that charging for access only monetises abuse and won’t stop unlawful images flooding the web.
Starmer Demands Action: ‘Disgusting and Not Tolerable’
In a fiery radio interview, Sir Keir slammed the AI scandal with no holds barred:
“This is disgraceful. It’s disgusting. And it’s not to be tolerated… X has got to get a grip of this… We’re not going to tolerate it… I’ve asked for all options to be on the table… X need to get their act together and get this material down.”
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall backed the crackdown, warning she’d support blocking X entirely if it breaks UK laws. “Sexually manipulating images of women and children is despicable and abhorrent,” she declared.
Musk Doubles Down on ‘Free Speech,’ Fans Fury
Musk fired back, accusing Starmer and Labour of using safety concerns as a cover for censorship. But critics say his mocking posts and defence of Grok’s AI are tone-deaf and dangerously provocative.
Experts note the stark difference between AI platforms and traditional media, which would face swift punishment for hosting such illegal content. The UK government’s hardline stance — with threats to ban X — shows zero tolerance on tech-enabled abuse.
As Ofcom speeds up its investigation, Musk’s free speech defence weakens against strict UK laws banning AI-generated child abuse and non-consensual images. The Grok scandal is shaping up as a key battle over AI ethics, online safety, and tech accountability.
