Diogo Bettencourt, 27, found guilty of cold-blooded murder of Anthony Sharma in Erdington shocker
Final Moments Before Horror
On the night of 8 November 2023, 43-year-old Anthony Sharma was last seen alive with Bettencourt, heading to an off-licence. They returned to their shared home on Doidge Road around 10.30pm — the final confirmed sighting of Anthony.
Just four hours later, Bettencourt was caught on camera alone, brazenly trying to withdraw cash using Anthony’s bank card. He didn’t stop there, carrying out multiple transactions the following day.
Grim Discovery and Arrest
Anthony’s body was found on the morning of 10 November, wrapped in a sleeping bag. The post-mortem revealed multiple stab wounds and severe head trauma. Bettencourt was arrested at 1.30pm that day. He remained silent throughout police questioning.
Callous Crime and Justice Ahead
“Throughout this investigation our thoughts have been with Anthony’s family who have patiently waited for two years to see justice be done,” said Detective Inspector Damian Forrest. “Bettencourt’s actions were callous as he went about his day having killed Anthony and even went on to use his bank card to make purchases. Thankfully, Bettencourt will now be spending a good amount of time behind bars.”
Bettencourt had admitted fraud but denied murder at trial. The jury didn’t buy it. Sentencing is scheduled for a later date.
