Ex-prison officer in hot water over forbidden fling at HMP Dovegate
Sarah Barnett faces court for illicit prisoner romance
Sarah Barnett, 31, has been charged with misconduct after reportedly having a secret relationship with an inmate at HMP Dovegate, Staffordshire. She appeared this week at Derby Magistrates’ Court over alleged offences between 11 and 24 August 2023 while working at the Category B prison near Uttoxeter.
Court documents accuse Barnett of wilful neglect of duty for her personal ties with a prisoner. She is due to return to Derby Crown Court on 6 November for her next hearing. Since quitting the prison service, Barnett now runs a beauty therapy business from her home in Rugeley, specialising in brow and lash treatments.
More corruption scandals rock HMP Dovegate
Barnett’s case is far from alone. Earlier this year, another former Dovegate officer, Heather Pinchbeck, 28, admitted similar misconduct. Pinchbeck pleasured illicit phone calls to inmate Joseph Hardy, serving 14 years for a brutal machete attack.
Pinchbeck is currently on conditional bail and awaits sentencing in January. Hardy was handed an eight-month sentence for illegal comms with a staff member and mobile phone possession.
These two scandals reveal a worsening corruption crisis. Female officers are disproportionately involved, authorities warn.
Prison staffing crisis fuels misconduct surge
Detective Chief Inspector Chris McClellan said such romances “greatly undermine and destabilise the prison regime.” Experts blame a wave of inexperienced officers – with over half boasting fewer than five years’ service – plus chronic understaffing.
Ex-officer Neil Samworth slammed the situation as “completely out of control,” blaming weak training and cunning prisoner manipulation for the spike in forbidden relationships.
The Prison Officers’ Association defended the majority of its staff. President Andrea Albutt praised thousands of hardworking female officers and urged the public not to judge the service by a few “bad apples.”
HMP Dovegate crackdown as Serco’s contract nears end
HMP Dovegate, run by private firm Serco, is already under scrutiny. A January 2024 inspection revealed rising violence and drug problems, partly blamed on prisoner boredom. Officials launched a new action plan to tackle these issues.
Serco oversees five prisons with over 4,500 inmates across England and Wales. Its Dovegate contract expires July 2026, with the Ministry of Justice currently reviewing bids for the next operator.
The government is beefing up anti-corruption efforts, tightening staff vetting, and pledging zero tolerance for misconduct. Misconduct in public office can lead to serious penalties, including life sentences in severe cases.
The Barnett scandal lays bare the urgent need to restore trust and clamp down on illicit affairs behind bars. Stay tuned for updates as authorities step up efforts to clean up UK jails.
