Newhaven’s West Beach Car Park Set for Massive Makeover
A bold new plan has landed on the desk of Lewes District Council to transform the West Beach car park in Newhaven. The application LW/24/0051 promises to ditch the old, tired structures and bring in a vibrant mix of amenities, including a single-storey restaurant, splash pads for kids, an outdoor gym, play areas, and fresh toilet and changing facilities. Plus, there’ll be extra open spaces and greenery to spruce up the area around the West Pier Amusement Arcade on Fort Road.
Boosting Local Fun and Tourism
This ambitious redevelopment aims to pump new life into the seaside town, offering locals and visitors alike more reasons to hang out and have fun. The project is more than just a facelift – it’s a major investment in Newhaven’s leisure and tourism scene. The hope is to attract more visitors, giving the town’s economy a much-needed boost.
Sandy Beach Stays Shut Amid Ongoing Talks
Meanwhile, the fate of Newhaven’s sandy beach remains up in the air. Closed since 2008 after being declared unsafe by Newhaven Port and Properties, the beach’s closure has sparked plenty of debate. The harbour authority insists the ‘unsafe’ tag is necessary to carry out its legal duties, keeping the sands off-limits.
Local Councillor Sean MacLeod recently weighed in on the issue, admitting on social media:
“I can’t answer on the sandy beach questions, I understand talks are still ongoing between the beach owners and Lewes DC, but I’m limited on information on that one.”
The statement highlights the messy legal wrangling and ongoing negotiations that stand between beach lovers and a possible reopening.
