Exclusive: Former Prisoner Held Over Murder of Isle of Wight Prison Officer on Christmas Day
A former remand prisoner remains in police custody, arrested on suspicion of murdering a beloved 57-year-old prison officer on the Isle of Wight. The officer, a long-serving custodian, was celebrating Christmas with his family when he was fatally attacked.
One-Punch Attack Claims Life of Prison Officer
The shocking assault happened near the Rose Inn on Christmas night. The 26-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene on Pier Street shortly after the incident. It’s believed the attack was a single punch, triggered when the suspect recognised the victim.
Emergency crews fought to save the officer’s life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two Others Held as Police Investigate
Alongside the main suspect, two other men remain in custody, also on suspicion of murder. Detectives are under the gun to charge the main suspect by 1am Tuesday.
The Isle of Wight’s Police Superintendent Sarah Jackson has authorised the man to be held for 36 hours. If cops want more time, they’ll need permission from the Isle of Wight magistrates.
Police Urge Witnesses to Come Forward
Officers are appealing for anyone who was near the Rose Inn on Christmas night to get in touch. Witnesses could hold crucial details that may help the investigation.
Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting Operation Extension.
