Rape Suspect’s Lawyer Slams US Extradition Bid as Human Rights Breach
A fierce legal battle is underway in Edinburgh as lawyer Mungo Bovey KC fought to block the extradition of Nicholas Rossi, a 35-year-old rape suspect wanted by US authorities. Bovey told the court that sending Rossi to the States would be a “flagrant violation” of his client’s human rights.
The hearing was briefly thrown into chaos when Rossi interrupted proceedings, demanding to sack his lawyer. But Sheriff Norman McFadyen quickly slammed down the row, warning Rossi that further disruptions could get him booted from court.
Citizenship in Doubt as UK Lawyer Challenges Extradition
Rossi, arrested in Glasgow more than two years ago, is resisting extradition over allegations relating to rape and other serious crimes. During the adjournment, Bovey questioned Rossi’s US citizenship, arguing it has not been conclusively proven — a key factor that could derail the extradition process.
Prison Conditions and Sentencing Threaten to Breach Human Rights
Bovey painted a grim picture of the Utah prison system where Rossi would be held if extradited. He highlighted staff shortages, poor medical care, and a suicide rate higher than average in those jails. Additionally, Bovey warned that any jail term might be handed down by an executive board — not a judicial court — which could further violate Rossi’s rights.
Rossi’s Arrest and Faked Death Allegation
Rossi was nabbed in December 2021 while being treated for COVID at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. US officials claim he faked his own death in 2020 to dodge prosecution, sparking an international manhunt. Now, the legal showdown intensifies as the extradition hearing presses on.
