HMRC Hits Ecclestone with Fraud Charge
Bernard Charles Ecclestone has been slapped with a fraud by false representation charge following a tough HMRC investigation. The CPS has approved the charge after HMRC uncovered more than £400 million in offshore assets Ecclestone failed to declare.
£400 Million Offshore Assets Spark Probe
HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service launched a global criminal probe into Ecclestone’s undeclared wealth. Simon York, Director of HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service, said: “HMRC is on the side of honest taxpayers, and wherever we suspect tax fraud, we will take tough action.” He added, “No one accused of tax evasion is beyond our reach.
CPS Warns Against Prejudicing Court Case
Andrew Penhale, Chief Crown Prosecutor, confirmed the CPS authorised the charge after reviewing HMRC evidence. He stressed the importance of a fair trial: “It is critical that there is no online reporting, commentary, or sharing of information that could jeopardise these proceedings.” Both HMRC and the CPS are keeping tight-lipped as the case now moves to court.
