Three Men Jailed Over Brutal Daylight Murder in Birmingham
Three men have been locked up after admitting to killing 51-year-old Darren Smith in a savage daytime attack at a phone shop in Shard End, Birmingham.
Attack at Phone Shop Turned Deadly
The horror unfolded on 15 March 2023. Darren Smith had popped into a Heath Way phone shop to buy a phone case. Inside, he was ambushed by Lee O’Brien and his two sons, Luke and Lewis.
The trio launched a vicious assault, kicking and punching Darren repeatedly before beating him with a wrench. During the attack, they snatched two Rolex watches from his wrist and threatened shop staff before fleeing in their cars.
Darren Dies After Desperate Attempt to Escape
Despite managing to stagger out of the shop, Darren collapsed nearby. Passersby rushed to help, giving first aid until emergency services arrived. Tragically, he died at the scene from his injuries.
Perpetrators Nabbed and Sentenced
The very next day, police tracked down Lee O’Brien, 51, and sons Luke, 36, and Lewis, 31, in Torquay. They had tried to dodge capture by borrowing a friend’s car but were swiftly arrested.
At Birmingham Crown Court on 19 September 2023, the trio pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
On 5 April 2024, the two sons received 12-and-a-half-year prison sentences, while their father got 11 years and eight months behind bars.
