Inferno at Broadmoor: Flames Rip Through Notorious Mental Hospital
A huge fire has broken out at Broadmoor Hospital in Crowthorne, Berkshire. Known as the UK’s top-security psychiatric facility, it houses some of Britain’s most infamous criminals.
Thick black smoke and towering flames are shooting from the site, sparking concern across the area.
Fire Erupts in Old Victorian Buildings
Social media footage reveals a massive plume of black smoke erupting from the hospital grounds. The blaze is focused on one of the Victorian-era residential blocks on the west side of the complex — buildings now unused and slated for redevelopment.
A Thames Valley Police spokesperson confirmed officers are on scene managing road closures but assured the public there’s no impact on the wider road network at this time.
Broadmoor’s Dark History
Broadmoor isn’t just any hospital. It’s where the likes of the Kray twins, Peter Sutcliffe (the Yorkshire Ripper), and Robert Maudsley were held. Current inmates include Ian Ball, who famously attempted to kidnap Princess Anne in 1974, and Michael Adebowale, convicted of the murder of soldier Lee Rigby.
Redevelopment Plans Hit by Blaze
The fire-damaged buildings are part of a heritage Grade II site earmarked for conversion into a hotel. Older blocks were abandoned after the new Broadmoor Hospital opened next door in 2019, offering state-of-the-art facilities.
Patient Safety Under Control
Broadmoor caters to around 240 patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. Most suffer severe mental illnesses or personality disorders. The NHS says average stays last five to six years, with many patients moved to lower-security units when safe.
Emergency Services Battle the Blaze
The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service is tackling the fire. More updates will follow as emergency crews continue their response.
