Fishing Firm Fined £220k After Deadly Gas Leak Kills Crewman
Sunbeam Limited, owners of a fishing boat at the centre of a fatal gas leak, has been slapped with a £220,000 fine. The boat’s skipper, James Duthie, 66, was also fined following the shocking death of crew member William Ironside in 2018.
Tragedy in Fraserburgh Harbour
The nightmare unfolded in August 2018 when the Sunbeam was docked at Fraserburgh Harbour. William Ironside, 52, fell seriously ill on board due to a gas leak from one of the vessel’s refrigerated tanks. Despite efforts to save him, he tragically died shortly after. Four other crew members were also affected and rushed to hospital.
Police and Agencies Launch Full Investigation
Police Scotland teamed up with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch to get to the bottom of the deadly leak. Their joint probe uncovered critical safety failures that led to the tragedy.
“Our thoughts remain with William’s family during this difficult time,” said Detective Inspector Sam Buchan. “We hope this sentencing brings some closure and highlights the importance of safety to prevent another tragedy.”
Family Mourns Beloved Husband and Father
William Ironside’s family released a heartfelt statement, calling him “a beloved husband and father” whose memory will live on forever. They continue to struggle with the devastating loss.
