Fatal New Year’s Day Fire Caused by Faulty E-Bike Battery

A tragic blaze on January 1st was sparked by a failed converted e-bike battery that blocked the escape route in a London flat. Firefighters are sounding the alarm as e-bike and e-scooter fires soar by 60% this year.

#ChargeSafe Campaign Launched After Deadly Fire

The London Fire Brigade has rolled out its new #ChargeSafe campaign to educate riders on the dangers of charging, storing, and converting e-bike and e-scooter batteries. This comes amid a sharp rise in serious fires linked to lithium batteries—powerful but volatile energy sources used in these vehicles.

Deputy Commissioner Dom Ellis said: “Sofia’s death is a tragedy, and our condolences are with her family and friends. We’re working hard to stop this happening again.”

Rising Fire Risk: One Blaze Every Two Days

So far in 2024, London Fire Brigade crews have tackled an e-bike or e-scooter fire roughly every other day—a 60% jump from the previous year. In 2022, they responded to 116 fires involving these vehicles, with 87 linked to e-bikes and 29 to e-scooters.

The January 1 fire was caused by a converted e-bike using a lithium battery pack that catastrophically failed, igniting the hallway and blocking the flat’s escape route. The victim’s mother heartbreakingly pleaded with Londoners to be cautious: “I don’t know what I’d do without her. It feels like a nightmare I can’t wake up from.”

How to Stay Safe with E-Bikes and E-Scooters

  • Never block your escape routes with e-bikes or e-scooters.
  • Store them away from main passageways—in garages or sheds where possible.
  • Only use batteries and chargers that meet UK safety standards from reputable sellers.
  • Watch for warning signs like batteries overheating or changing shape.
  • Let batteries cool fully before charging.
  • Never leave charging devices unattended or overnight.
  • Install smoke alarms near charging areas and test them regularly.

Dom Ellis added: “Purchasing complete, certified e-bikes from trusted retailers is the safest way to protect yourself and your family from devastating fires.”

Why Lithium Batteries Are So Dangerous

Lithium batteries pack a huge punch in a tiny package, but if damaged, overcharged, or improperly handled, they can catch fire or explode. Issues like overheating or physical damage can trigger uncontrollable energy release, leading to serious fires.

The Brigade usually withholds details during ongoing court proceedings, but due to the severity of this incident, special permission was granted to raise awareness and hopefully save lives.
