Ex-Cop Caught Sending Creepy Messages to Crime Victim
Former South Yorkshire Officer Admits Misconduct
Stuart Trentham, 40, once a police constable with South Yorkshire Police, has pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office. Trentham admitted sending inappropriate, flirtatious messages to a vulnerable crime victim while investigating their case. The scandal unfolded in Sheffield Crown Court today, shaking trust in the force.
Flirty Texts Spark Investigation
Based in Doncaster, Trentham started off discussing the victim’s case but soon shifted to sexualised and improper messaging between July and August 2022. Alarmed, the victim reported the behaviour to South Yorkshire Police in August 2022, triggering swift action.
- Police Professional Standards Department launched a probe immediately.
- Trentham was arrested and suspended on August 23, 2022.
- Despite no comment in his police interview, incriminating evidence was found on his devices.
Resigns After Gross Misconduct Ruling
Trentham quit the force on December 3, 2023. Later that month, a separate misconduct hearing uncovered he had improperly accessed police computer systems. The hearing ruled his actions as gross misconduct, meaning he would have been sacked without notice if still employed.
“The public expect and deserve the very highest standards of professionalism when interacting with our officers… Trentham’s behaviour was utterly unacceptable,” said Detective Superintendent James Axe, head of Professional Standards.
Sentencing Looms
Trentham has been released on bail and is set to face sentencing at Sheffield Crown Court on January 6, 2025. The case has sent shockwaves through South Yorkshire Police, highlighting urgent concerns over officer conduct.
