PC Bonnie Murphy Slapped with Five-Year Final Warning for Misconduct
Misconduct Hearing Ends with Written Warning
The misconduct hearing of PC Bonnie Murphy wrapped up on 18 July 2024 at Palestra House, handing her a five-year final written warning. At just 20 years old during the incidents, Murphy was found guilty of breaching key professional standards, including Discreditable Conduct and Honesty and Integrity.
Serious Breaches Over Two Incidents
The charges centred on two main incidents. First, Murphy requested a photo of a deceased person without any policing justification. Second, she used unauthorised material to prep for her police driving exam – even confessing to using Google to cheat on one question. The misconduct panel ruled her actions were deliberate but took into account her youth, stress, and partial admissions as mitigating factors.
Dismissal Avoided But Future Role Uncertain
Despite the serious breaches, the panel decided not to dismiss Murphy. They stressed the importance of maintaining public confidence, high policing standards, and protecting the public. Instead, the five-year final warning was deemed the best way to uphold these principles.
The Metropolitan Police Service confirmed Murphy will stay with the force but warned her role may be limited, notably restricting her from any evidentiary duties.
