Fire Tears Through London Flat After Careless Cigarette

A blaze ripped through part of a three-roomed first-floor flat, forcing eight residents to flee. Fire crews, decked out in breathing apparatus, tackled the flames and evacuated everyone safely.

One woman needed treatment on the spot by the London Ambulance Service.

Cause: Reckless Disposal of Smoking Materials

London Fire Brigade investigators say the fire was accidental, sparked by careless cigarette disposal. A spokesperson warned: “We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you are a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.

“If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy your home, but also cost you your life.”

The brigade rushed to the scene at 11:06am and had the fire under control by 11:56am. Crews from Paddington, Euston, Kensington, and Soho stations battled the flames.

  • Smoke outside whenever possible.
  • Always put cigarettes *right out* before disposing of them.
  • Never smoke in bed or on sofas and armchairs—especially if you might doze off.
  • Be extra careful when tired, on medication, or after drinking alcohol.
  • Use sturdy ashtrays that won’t tip over and stub cigarettes out properly.
  • Empty ashtrays carefully—make sure cigarette ends are cold or wet before binning them.
  • Never dump smoking materials in a wastepaper basket.

Heed these tips and prevent your home from going up in smoke.
