Five Bulgarians Nabbed for Britain’s Biggest Ever Benefit Fraud
A gang of five Bulgarians has been convicted of running the UK’s largest benefits scam, ripping off a staggering £54 million. This massive fraud is being labelled Britain’s most significant ever.
Thousands of Fake Claims from North London ‘Benefit Factories’
Galina Nikolova, Stoyan Stoyanov, Tsvetka Todorova, Gyunesh Ali, and Patritsia Paneva, aged 26 to 52, masterminded the scam over four-and-a-half years. They created around 6,000 bogus Universal Credit claims using thousands of fake identities.
The gang operated from three secret ‘benefit factories’ in north London. One base was disguised as a legit corner shop—Antonia’s Foods in Wood Green. Shamelessly, they posted photos on social media of themselves smiling behind the counter, flaunting their dirty money.
Cash, Forgeries & Luxury Lifestyle Uncovered
Police found £750,000 in cash stashed in suitcases at one home, hundreds of forged claim documents, and over 900 devices used to run the scam. Footage shows them literally throwing £20 notes around their apartment like it’s a nightclub.
The spoils paid for designer clothes, watches, flashy cars—including an Audi sports model—plus luxury spa trips and exotic holidays. Prosecutors slammed their “cash machine” attitude towards the benefits system, exposing the gang’s brazen greed.
Guilty Pleas and Tough Sentencing Ahead
All five pleaded guilty at Wood Green Crown Court in what prosecutors call the biggest benefits fraud prosecution in England and Wales. Sentencing is set for May 28, with authorities ready to seize their illegal profits through the CPS Proceeds of Crime Division.
The government is also rolling out tougher fraud powers to protect taxpayers and clamp down on future scams. This landmark case highlights the ongoing battle to defend the welfare system and punish those who exploit it at the expense of the most vulnerable.
