Teacher Jailed for Grooming and Abusing Boys on Dating Apps
A 31-year-old man has been locked up for 11 years after using dating apps and social media to groom and sexually abuse a 14-year-old boy. George Watkins, from Dunstable, exploited vulnerable youngsters he met online, sparking a major police investigation from a single tip-off.
Serial Offender Pleads Guilty to 19 Charges
Watkins pleaded guilty at Wood Green Crown Court to 19 offences, including seven counts of sexual activity with a child and multiple charges of making, taking, and distributing indecent images of children. He was also slapped with a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Officers revealed Watkins used Grindr to befriend boys aged 14 and 16. The 14-year-old was abused on seven occasions – all secretly filmed at Watkins’ home, an Airbnb, and even in his car. Shocking videos were shared online by the predator to others.
Chilling Details of Abuse and Online Manipulation
- Watkins coerced the 16-year-old to film abuse with a 13-year-old child and send him the footage.
- He shared sexually explicit videos online and groomed boys through private messages.
- Police found 457 indecent images of children on his devices.
- Watkins used his position as a secondary school teacher to gain boys’ trust.
“When I reflect on what Watkins did, I feel completely used and taken advantage of,” said the 16-year-old victim.
The 14-year-old added: “He made me feel exploited and sub-human, as if I didn’t matter.”
Police Praise Victims’ Bravery in Bringing Paedophile to Justice
Detective Inspector Hardeep Kaur of the Met said: “Watkins arranged meetings with boys using Grindr and social media, then abused and filmed them for his own sick gratification. This case sends a clear warning to young people about the dangers lurking on dating apps.”
Detective Sergeant Jules Manock added: “Watkins showed zero remorse and used his charm and teaching role to manipulate vulnerable boys. Thanks to a painstaking investigation and brave survivors, he’s now behind bars.”
Detective Constable Stefan Wimmer explained the case began with one informant reporting that Watkins shared explicit images without consent in January 2019. “We conducted multiple searches and interviews, proving Watkins was a wolf in sheep’s clothing who preyed on vulnerable children.”
Warning to Youths: Dating Apps Are No Safe Space
DC Wimmer urged young people to take care online: “Ask yourself who you’re talking to and what safeguards you have. Remember, dating apps are made for adults, not children.”
Watkins’ reign of terror also led to his immediate removal from his teaching job after police uncovered his offences and various bail conditions were applied following his 2019 arrest.
