Goldsmiths Student Zhe Wang Fatally Stabbed in ‘Savage’ Attack
Brutal Murder Rocks Southeast London
A quiet, gentle Goldsmiths University student has been viciously stabbed to death in her flat in Hither Green. Zhe Wang, 31, a Chinese national and master’s student in Creative Writing and Education, was found with horrific stab wounds to her face last March. Prosecutors describe the killing as a “savage and brutal attack.”
The accused, 24-year-old American student Joshua Michals, is now on trial at a London court facing murder charges.
Tragic Night Unfolds at Manor Park Flat
The court heard Zhe and Michals, who had known each other for months and recently started a sexual relationship, were involved in the deadly incident on March 20, 2024. Michals made a chilling 999 call from his flat claiming Zhe had attacked him. He said he only had minor scratches but ominously told the operator, “It’s too late for anyone to help her,” before hanging up to call his father.
Police forced their way into Zhe’s flat, discovering her lifeless body covered in bloodstains on the bedroom floor. A post-mortem revealed multiple stab wounds to her face and evidence of neck compression, indicating a prolonged assault.
Prosecutors Paint Grim Picture
“This case concerns the killing of a young woman by a man whom she had known for only a few months. The attack was brutal and savage,” said prosecutor Henrietta Paget. “The evidence from her injuries and the scene is clear.”
Michals apparently called 999 after the attack but offered no help. On arrest, he allegedly told officers, “Yeah, but it’s not what it seems.”
Victim Remembered as Bright and Ambitious
Zhe Wang was a talented and disciplined student aiming to become a teacher. She dreamed of completing a PhD and returning to China to make her mark. Friends and tutors praised her organisation, kindness, and pride in her academic work, with Goldsmiths University condemning the “horrific” loss.
Defence Claims Self-Defence
Michals denies murder, claiming the stabbing was accidental during self-defence after Zhe attacked him. The trial is ongoing with more witness evidence expected.
Community Left Reeling
The killing has shocked Goldsmiths and the local community alike. The university extended heartfelt condolences to Zhe’s family and friends as the grim trial continues at the Crown Court.
