Man Jailed for Rape After Met Police Investigation
Desmond Rodney, 46, of Hollar Road, N16, has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for two counts of rape following a Met Police investigation by the rape and serious sexual offences team.
Guilty Verdict at Wood Green Crown Court
Rodney appeared at Wood Green Crown Court on April 28, where he was found guilty after a trial in March. Alongside his prison sentence, he received a ten-year restraining order banning any contact with the victim and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
Victim’s Bravery Praised by Police
Detective Inspector Chris Heathcote, who leads Hackney’s Sapphire unit, said: “Rodney denied the offences and thought he’d get away with it. But thanks to the evidence and the victim’s testimony, the jury saw through his lies and found him guilty.”
“The victim showed incredible bravery by reporting him and giving evidence in court. We’re pleased justice has been served and hope it encourages others affected by sexual offences to come forward.”
Details of the Case
- In September 2022, the victim, who knew Rodney, reported to a north London police station that he had raped her at her Hackney home.
- She also claimed Rodney locked her in her bedroom until she complied with his sexual demands.
- Rodney was arrested the same day but denied the charges, insisting the sex was consensual.
- The victim was supported throughout by a Sexual Offences Investigation Trained (SOIT) officer, who kept her informed and explained every step.
- Special measures in court, like a screen to shield the victim from seeing Rodney, helped her feel more comfortable giving evidence.
Victim’s Impact Statement
“Mostly I try to forget what happened because it was so horrible, but it was so traumatising I can’t,” she said. “I kept asking ‘Why me?’ It has ruined my ability to trust others or have a positive outlook.”
“I’m grateful to have been heard. Although I despise him for putting me through court rather than owning up, I’m glad the jury believed me when I said I was raped.”
