Tragic Killing of 83-Year-Old Neil O’Donnell Shakes Birmingham
The brutal assault of 83-year-old Neil O’Donnell during a robbery attempt in Hall Green has left the Birmingham community stunned and spotlighted rising violent crime in the city.
Attack on Cateswell Road Ends in Death
On May 14 at around 2:30 PM, Mr. O’Donnell was confronted by a man demanding his watch and phone on Cateswell Road. The attacker, wielding a screwdriver, slashed Mr. O’Donnell’s arm before fleeing empty-handed.
Neil was initially treated and discharged from Queen Elizabeth Hospital but was readmitted on May 17. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on May 21.
Two Men Charged with Murder
Police have charged Wesley McDonnell, 46, and Tony Griffin, 54, with murder and conspiracy to rob. The pair appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on May 24 and are now remanded in custody.
Detective Inspector Nigel Box said: “Our thoughts are with Mr. O’Donnell’s family. We’re offering them full support as we continue to investigate.”

The Hall Green neighbourhood has been rocked by grief and anger.
