Harvey Weinstein Cleared of UK Indecent Assault Charges
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has dropped all criminal charges of indecent assault against disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein. The CPS said there is now “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”
Charges Linked to 1996 London Incident
Back in June 2022, the CPS had authorised two indecent assault charges against Weinstein over alleged events in London from 1996. But these charges will now be scrapped, ending the UK legal pursuit.
CPS Confirms Decision After Evidence Review
Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, said: “Following a review of the evidence, the CPS has decided to discontinue criminal proceedings against Harvey Weinstein. We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review and there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”
He added: “We have explained our decision to all parties. We encourage any victims of sexual assault to come forward and report to police. We will prosecute whenever our legal test is met.”
Weinstein’s Legal Troubles Continue in the US
While cleared in the UK, Weinstein remains behind bars in the US. His 2020 New York rape conviction was overturned this year over trial fairness concerns. A new trial is slated for November.
Meanwhile, he’s already serving a 16-year prison sentence after a 2022 Los Angeles trial found him guilty on three counts of rape and sexual assault.
