Portsmouth Head Shops Under Watch as 'Legal Highs' Ban Looms
Portsmouth’s four notorious head shops selling psychoactive “legal highs” are on notice. A new national ban on these substances, known officially as new psychoactive substances (NPS), kicks in later this spring – and local authorities say they’ll be watching closely.
Crackdown Threat: Up to Seven Years Jail
Portsmouth City Council and Hampshire police have warned shop owners to stop selling these dangerous drugs immediately. Fail to comply, and they face hefty penalties – including up to seven years behind bars.
Council trading standards now have full enforcement powers under the new law. This means they can enter and search premises with a warrant to ensure compliance.
Council Steps Up Enforcement
Cllr Robert New, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “We’ve been pushing the government for tougher rules to tackle NPS sales. I’m glad the ban is finally here, giving us real power to clamp down on shops distributing substances that fuel anti-social behaviour and harm individuals.”
He added: “We already work closely with the police and other agencies to tackle these problems in public spaces. Now, with the new law, shops have no excuse. Selling these drugs is a serious criminal offence.”
Community Support and Awareness
An NPS steering group involving the council, police, and the University of Portsmouth meets regularly to monitor the situation. Shops have been ordered to display council posters and leaflets that guide users towards treatment centres.
