Headcorn Arsonist Jailed for Brutal Assault and Car Blaze
A violent Headcorn man has been locked up for attacking a woman and torching her car in a shocking spree of crime.
Unprovoked Attack Leaves Woman Seriously Injured
Joseph Wenham brutally assaulted his victim on 11 August 2019. He poured a drink over her head before punching her, leaving her with serious facial injuries. The attack came without any warning or provocation.
Car Set Ablaze Weeks Later
Less than two months later, Wenham struck again. On 30 September, he set fire to the woman’s car parked off Busbridge Road, Loose. The vehicle was completely destroyed in the blaze.
High-Speed Police Chase Ends in Arrest
Police quickly identified Wenham as the suspect. When a marked patrol car spotted him driving in Ulcombe, Wenham fled, reaching speeds up to 90mph on narrow country lanes. His reckless escape ended when he ditched the car on Headcorn Road and attempted to hide in brambles. Officers arrested the 50-year-old on the spot.
Denials Fall Flat as Court Hands Down Sentence
Despite denying all charges—including causing the victim’s injuries and the arson—Wenham pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court. On 29 January 2020, he was sentenced to two years and six months behind bars. He also received a driving ban for two years and three months.
PC Phil Crowhurst, West Kent Vulnerable Investigation Team, said: “Wenham’s victim faced repeated harassment and a vicious assault, causing lasting injuries. His arson attack showed just how dangerous and unpredictable he is. I hope this sentence gives her some comfort. I want to thank her for her bravery in helping us bring Wenham to justice.”
