Heartless thief David Hornby jailed for 10 years after terrifying raid on 76-year-old pensioner
Horrific home invasion in quiet Norton street
David Hornby, 40, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars, plus an extra three years on extended licence, for a shocking robbery that left a 76-year-old woman traumatised in her own home.
The brutal attack happened in the early hours of Sunday, July 2, when Hornby broke into the victim’s house on Japonica Way, Norton, while she was fast asleep. Awakened by strange noises, the elderly lady went to check — only to come face-to-face with the ruthless intruder who then violently assaulted her.
Victim tied up and left helpless for hours
Showing zero mercy, Hornby bound the woman’s arms and legs, threatened her with violence, and stole valuables including her bank card. The helpless pensioner was left tied up for over two hours, enduring both physical and emotional pain.
In a statement, the brave victim revealed the deep sense of violation and fear she experienced, feeling imprisoned in her own home. She praised the support from her community, which helped her through the nightmare, and vowed to live life to the fullest despite what she endured.
Swift police action leads to arrest and conviction
Stockton and Middlesbrough CID detectives, working alongside Crime Scene Officers, quickly pinned the crime on Hornby. He was arrested the very next day and charged with robbery, false imprisonment, and fraud by false representation. On August 1, Hornby pleaded guilty at Teesside Crown Court, with sentencing handed down on October 27.
Detective Chief Inspector Chatterton, lead investigator, called the case one of the most distressing he has ever dealt with. He said the victim suffered immense fear and pressure as Hornby repeatedly returned to the scene, worsening her agony while she stayed bound and helpless.
Justice served and message sent
DCI Chatterton praised the victim’s courage and the strong community backing her. He also lauded his team’s dedication in bringing Hornby to justice. The officer warned that such cold-blooded crimes would not be tolerated and the hefty sentence delivers a clear message: criminals who prey on the vulnerable will face the full force of the law.
