Massive Blaze Engulfs Croydon Self-Storage Warehouse

Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters are battling a huge fire at a self-storage warehouse on Purley Way, Croydon. At its peak, flames tore through the entire four-storey building.

Challenging Fire Loads Make Fight Tough

Assistant Commissioner Graham Ellis, on the scene, revealed the scale of the inferno. “This is a significant blaze with a large amount of combustible materials inside,” he said. “Self-storage units are packed with furniture and household items that burn fiercely and produce thick smoke. These fires tend to rage for a long time.”

Smoke Plume Prompts Health Warning

Firefighters have managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings. However, a dense plume of smoke still rises above the site. Ellis urged locals to keep windows and doors shut due to visible smoke and strong odours in the air.

Road Closures and Disruptions Hit Croydon

Purley Way remains closed, causing major traffic chaos. Emergency teams are working with police and local businesses to manage congestion. Authorities advise avoiding the area if possible.

Thankfully, no one was inside the warehouse and no injuries have been reported. The London Fire Brigade was called at 7:47pm. At peak, 20 fire engines and 120 firefighters tackled the flames.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
