Highbury Man Jailed for 10 Years Over Brutal Ex-Partner Attacks
Richard Summers, 35, from Highbury, London, has been locked up for a decade after a harrowing series of crimes against his ex-partner. He was found guilty of rape, assault causing actual bodily harm, and coercive and controlling behaviour. The sentencing took place on Thursday, September 14th, at Snaresbrook Crown Court. Summers was also slapped with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and added to the sex offenders register for 15 years.
Horrific Abuse Exposed at Trial
The court heard chilling details of Summers’ violent history towards his victim. The crime that sealed his fate happened on Saturday, March 4th, around 1 pm. Police rushed to a pub in Highbury Barn, N5, after a concerned bystander raised alarm.
Officers found the victim badly injured and visibly distressed. She revealed Summers had barged into her bedroom, high on cocaine, and forced himself on her. Despite her fierce resistance, Summers punched her repeatedly and smashed a glass ashtray across her head. She managed to escape only when Summers fell asleep.
Police and Experts Condemn Summers as “Predatory Offender”
Detective Constable Max Orange spearheaded the investigation, calling Summers a “predatory offender” responsible for “sickening” abuse. Orange warned Summers was a serious threat to anyone unlucky enough to cross paths with him.
He praised the hard work of officers who fought to bring Summers to justice and highlighted the force’s commitment to protecting women and girls in London.
Safeguarding measures and specialist care were put in place for the victim throughout the case, connecting her with support agencies to help her recovery.
Unrepentant Summers Tried to Shift Blame
Despite the overwhelming evidence, Summers lied during police interviews, claiming the victim’s injuries were from a bike crash into a lamppost and denying the rape. His shocking lack of remorse stood out during the trial.
Summers admitted to assault but denied other charges. After seven days of trial, the jury took eight hours to convict him of rape and coercive control.
Met Police Vow to Protect Women and Girls
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Ridley, Islington’s public protection lead, called Summers a “very dangerous individual” and praised detectives for their relentless work to make London safer.
Ridley stressed more must be done to safeguard women and girls across the capital, citing ongoing partnership efforts and victim support as part of the New Met for London plan to tackle domestic violence head-on.
