Holiday Mum and Kids Plucked from Rising Tide Near Cowes

A holidaying mum and her two young children were dramatically rescued from the sea after being cut off by a rising tide near Gurnard Sail Club this afternoon (Sunday, August 19th).

Stranded on the Shore

The family, staying at Thorness Bay holiday park, found themselves trapped as the tide surged in while they walked along the shore from Thorness to Gurnard. The mum and her children were reportedly exhausted and stranded in the water for some time before help arrived.

Heroic Rescue by Coastguard and RNLI

A swift response from the Needles Coastguard Search and Rescue Team and the RNLI Cowes lifeboat saved the trio. The lifeboat crew quickly took the family aboard Sheena Louise lifeboat and ferried them to Gurnard Marsh beach.

From there, the Needles Coastguard team drove the relieved family back safely to their caravan at Thorness Bay.

Safe and Sound

Thankfully, the mum and her children escaped injury. A Cowes RNLI spokesperson said:

++++ LAUNCH ++++ B859 Sheena Louise was tasked by HM Coastguard to assist a mother and two children walking the shore who were cut off by the rising tide. Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew took them onboard and delivered them to Gurnard Marsh beach where the Needles Coastguard Team were waiting to take them back to Thorness holiday park.”

The rescue mission was quick and efficient, launching at 3.08pm and returning by 3.50pm, with crew members helping the family safely board the lifeboat.
