Teen Killer Logan MacPhail Named After Judge Lifts Anonymity
Logan MacPhail has finally been named as the brutal killer of 15-year-old Holly Newton following a judge’s decision to lift reporting restrictions. The 17-year-old fatally stabbed Holly in a savage attack in Hexham, Northumberland, on 27 January 2023.
36 Knife Wounds in Frenzied Assault
MacPhail inflicted a horrifying 36 knife wounds on Holly, including 12 stabbings and 19 slashes. Five of those wounds were “defensive,” showing Holly fought desperately for her life. Despite rushed efforts at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, Holly tragically died.
A 16-year-old boy who tried to intervene was also seriously injured, needing surgery for wounds to his shoulder, arm, and thigh.
Jealousy and Stalking Spark Deadly Attack
MacPhail and Holly had been in a relationship, but Holly wanted out. Prosecutors say jealousy flared when she started seeing someone else. Holly’s mum, Micala Trussler, had even alerted police and arranged for Holly not to go home if MacPhail was nearby. Holly confided to a friend she felt MacPhail was stalking her.
On the day of the murder, CCTV showed MacPhail trailing Holly for around 45 minutes through Hexham town centre. He waited at a bus stop before luring her into an alleyway where he launched the fatal attack. The knife used broke during the assault.
MacPhail Denies Murder, Faces Life Sentence
MacPhail, who has autism and a low IQ, pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murder. He claimed he intended to take his own life and that his mind “went blank” during the attack. The jury rejected this defence, finding him guilty of murder in August 2024.
With his 18th birthday looming on 9 December, the judge ruled he can now be publicly named. MacPhail faces life imprisonment at his sentencing hearing later this month.
Family Mourns Holly’s Loss
“She was a funny and happy teenager, deeply loved by her close-knit group of friends. Holly had a passion for sports and dancing, which made her feel fearless,” read a statement from Holly’s mother at the trial.
Her death has shattered her family and devastated the local community. Holly Newton was a bright, vibrant young girl taken far too soon.
