Ilford Man Shot Dead by Relative in Pakistan – UK Inquest Hit by Red Tape
A 27-year-old from Ilford was fatally shot by a family member while visiting Pakistan, a UK inquest has revealed. Daniel Sher, of Vaughan Gardens, died from a chest gunshot wound in Gujrat, Pakistan, on May 29, 2024.
Despite viral TikTok videos sparking online speculation, British officials remain in the dark over the killing’s details.
UK Inquest Stalled Over Missing Evidence
At East London Coroner’s Court, Senior Coroner Graeme Irvine confirmed the inquest has been delayed six months. Pakistani authorities have failed to hand over key investigation evidence.
“I have received nothing in relation to the issue of the criminal investigation that has gone on in Pakistan,” said Mr Irvine. “Requests through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) have yielded limited cooperation.”
While Daniel’s passport, death certificate, and repatriation papers have arrived, crucial trial documents remain absent.
Uncle Initially Confessed – Then Backed Out
Daniel’s mother revealed during the hearing that an uncle admitted shooting him but later tried to withdraw the confession and applied repeatedly for bail.
She lamented the lack of UK government support. Forced to fund a lawyer in Pakistan herself, she still faces spotty communication.
“My son is killed. I want help to follow the case,” she said. “He is a British passport holder. What support can the UK government offer?”
Mr Irvine sympathised and urged the FCDO to provide assistance.
“They should facilitate communication between you here in England and the courts in Pakistan,” he told her.
Next Steps: Inquest on Ice Until 2025
The inquest is adjourned until November 2025 as UK courts await sentencing details from Pakistan, which might shed light on the case.
“Further information from the sentencing hearing could prove useful to the inquest,” Mr Irvine explained.
The FCDO issued a statement saying:
“We have supported the family of a British national who died in Pakistan and have been in contact with local authorities.”
Family Demands Justice, UK Government Urged to Do More
This case highlights the frustrating limits UK coroners face when Britons die abroad and the uphill battle families endure for justice.
Daniel Sher’s loved ones are calling for stronger diplomatic and legal backing from the UK government to track the case properly across borders.
