Senator Jailed for Organ-Harvesting Kidnap Plot
Senator Ike Ekweremadu, 60, his wife Beatrice, 56, and medical middleman Dr Obinna Obeta, 51, were convicted at the Old Bailey in a shocking modern slavery case. The trio trafficked a destitute Lagos street trader to the UK to harvest his kidney for their daughter Sonia, 25.
Victim’s Nightmare Unfolded
The victim, promised a better life and up to £7,000, was brought to the UK under false pretences. He was made to pose as Sonia’s cousin to fool doctors at the Royal Free Hospital. His ordeal ended when he escaped to the police station exactly one year ago after the £80,000 transplant was halted.
Judge Slams ‘Despicable’ Organ Trade
“People trafficking across international borders for the harvesting of human organs is a form of slavery,” said Mr Justice Johnson during sentencing. “It regards humans and their body parts as commodities that can be bought and sold. It’s a trade that preys on poverty, misery, and desperation.”
Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months behind bars—a massive fall from grace for the senator.
Ongoing Investigation Into Organ Harvesting Rings
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy hailed the victim’s bravery and revealed this is just the tip of the iceberg. “Although organ harvesting is rare, more victims are now coming forward.”
Police confirm investigations continue into similar crimes as modern slavery cases rise across London. Furphy urged the public to report suspicious activity. “This trade thrives in all our communities, from nail bars to car washes to sex industries.”
Family’s Lavish Lifestyle Exposed
Despite owning £6 million in property and living in affluent south London, the Ekweremadus showed no care for the vulnerable victim. They badgered doctors with forged paperwork and tried to keep up appearances while abusing their power to exploit a desperate man.
While Sonia Ekweremadu was cleared of any wrongdoing, she watched from the public gallery as her parents were sentenced for their vile conspiracy.
