Just Stop Oil Activist Cleared After Spraying New Scotland Yard Sign

Lora Johnson, 38, a fiery supporter of Just Stop Oil, was acquitted today at Southwark Crown Court of criminal damage. She was arrested last October for spraying New Scotland Yard’s iconic Metropolitan Police sign with orange paint during a Just Stop Oil protest.

Hundreds Arrested Amid Climate Crackdown

Johnson was just one of 637 activists detained during a wave of civil disobedience aimed at forcing the government to halt all new oil and gas licences. A video of her arrest on Westminster Bridge — where she declared “inaction on climate change is a death sentence for all” — racked up over 11 million views.

Activist: Police Protect Oil Interests, Not People

The action I took was painting the New Scotland Yard sign orange, in resistance to the government’s genocidal approval of new oil and gas licences,” Johnson told reporters. She questioned whether the Metropolitan Police serve the public or protect an oil-corrupted government.

Wave of Legal Wins for Just Stop Oil

Johnson’s acquittal follows a string of recent victories for the climate activists. Five supporters were cleared of Section 12 breach at Stratford Magistrates Court, while Fiona Atkinson and Catherine Rennie-Nash were found not guilty of willful obstruction on highways. Meanwhile, Swedish group Restore Wetlands called off protests after securing political commitments from all major parties.

Activists Warn: No More Begging, Time to Act

“We are not prepared to watch while everything we love is destroyed. We’re done with begging,” Johnson declared. She urged others to join the movement to fight the escalating climate crisis.

Experts Warn Climate Crisis Is Racing Out of Control

A recent Guardian survey revealed 77% of climate scientists expect global temperatures to soar at least 2.5°C above pre-industrial levels — well past the 2015 Paris Agreement target of 1.5°C. Political inertia and powerful corporate interests remain major obstacles.

Environmental scientist Lorraine Whitmarsh stressed the crisis poses an existential threat to future generations. Stephen Humphreys of the London School of Economics backed civil disobedience as a crucial tool for urgent climate action.
