Maidstone Man Jailed for Brutal Domestic Abuse Caught on Video Call

A 29-year-old Maidstone man has been locked up after a chilling video phone call captured him violently attacking his partner amid years of abuse.

Two Years of Abuse Ends in Violent Strangulation

James Dye, from College Road, Maidstone, terrorised his victim with relentless physical and psychological abuse for over two years. The nightmare peaked on 14 May 2024 when Dye visited his partner’s home, turned violent during a dispute, and assaulted her.

In a desperate bid for help, the victim grabbed a tablet and made a video call to a friend. The friend witnessed Dye with both hands around her neck.

Victim Flees But Dye’s Abuse Continues

The woman escaped the home but Dye followed her shouting threats and insults as she boarded a train.

Police were alerted weeks later. Dye was arrested on 25 June 2024.

Shocking Control and Abuse Revealed

  • Dye dictated the victim’s clothing and banned makeup.
  • He isolated her by blocking friends on her phone.
  • Psychological control was relentless.

At Maidstone Crown Court, Dye pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour. A charge of intentional strangulation was ordered to lie on file. On 28 January 2025, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison and slapped with a five-year restraining order.

“Dye subjected his victim to repeated psychological and physical abuse, using fear and threats of violence to exert control over every aspect of her life,” said Detective Constable Josh Barkaway, who led the investigation.

“His terrifying behaviour left her living in constant fear. The victim showed incredible courage in coming forward, which helped us secure this conviction.”

“No one should feel trapped in an abusive relationship. Help is out there—anyone facing this should reach out to someone they trust.”

This case is a stark reminder: domestic abuse happens behind closed doors but support is available to those trapped in these horrific situations.
